It’s in the daffodil fields and the bluebells scattered on woodland floors. The days that linger a little longer, and leaning back on sun-warmed walls. Spring is coming. And what better way to celebrate than by taking a stroll through Cornwall’s blossoming gardens?
As the clocks leap forward, Cornwall’s landscape springs to life: a smattering of vibrant colours and that famous, magical light. So if you can hear our coastline calling, be sure to venture out and revel in the county’s amazing gardens. You’ll be pretty spoilt for choice around these parts. So here are three of our favourite springtime spots to help you decide.
Which one will get your green fingers going?
26 March
Tuck into tapas in the Mediterranean biome before walking it all off on a floral tour of the exotic gardens. The mild winter has given Eden one of its most spectacular springs yet, with shrubs, trees and flowers at their best. There really is no better time to visit this Cornish landmark – and don’t forget to bring your Mum, because it’s Mother’s Day at the Eden Project. And today Mums go free.
1 April – 2 April
It’s Britain’s first horticultural showcase of the year, and in our (completely unbiased) opinion, it may just be the best. Whether you’re a dedicated gardener or simply appreciate a well-groomed bloom, join the 6,000-strong crowd to celebrate Cornwall’s rich garden heritage. Gawp at the plethora of plants from over 100 traders, listen to live lectures, watch the awards and enjoy an afternoon tipple in the canvas-topped bar. And if you’re bringing little ones, there will be heaps of activities to keep them busy, too.
If you can’t make it in April try again in May, when the Woodland Gardens – a paradise of azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias and ancient trees – open for visitors.
From 16 April
Sitting proudly over Padstow since 1592, Prideaux Place is a must visit for fans of history, architecture and perfectly preened gardens. Take a wander through time exploring features from the Elizabethan build, 17th-century temple, grotto and obelisk, to more recent additions like the formal Victorian Garden and Acer Glade. And with a view from the lawn over the Camel Estuary to Rock and beyond, you’ll be hard pushed to find a better vantage point for a picnic.
The gardens open Easter Sunday, just in time to watch the deer prancing in the ancient deer park. Tempted? We thought so.
