Why Take a Long Weekend or Short Break in Cornwall?

We spend so much time planning and thinking about our long one or two week holidays, that we sometimes forget about all the regular short breaks we can also take throughout the year. A long weekend away can work wonders for the soul and send you back home refreshed and prepared for the challenges of everyday life.

When pondering potential destinations to visit for a mini break, we believe Cornwall should top the wishlist. These are just some of the reasons why we recommend a long weekend or short break in Cornwall.

Take a Break from the Norm

Let’s face it. No matter how good your life is, it’s sometimes good to get away from the daily grind and transplant yourself somewhere as distinctive and beautiful as Cornwall. Instead of walking down the High Street at the weekend, you can stretch your legs with a stroll along a gorgeous sandy beach or hike the cliff-tops on the South West Coast Path. Instead of taking the kids to Saturday morning clubs, excite them with a visit to the tropical biome in the Eden Project or a bike ride along the scenic Camel Trail. As an eye-opening short break destination, Cornwall certainly packs a punch.

Reconnect with the Outdoors

Living in a town or city has many benefits, but sometimes it’s good to escape the urban jungle for a dose of real nature. A visit to Cornwall – at any time of the year – represents an opportunity to reconnect with the outdoors. Enjoy head-clearing fresh air, visit amazing natural attractions, see wonderful wildlife and maybe even restore your senses with a dip in the sea. As well as walking, swimming and sightseeing, there are all sorts of outdoor activities to experience and enjoy. Close to Padstow you can choose from a diverse range of adventures including surfing, mountain biking, coasteering, wakeboarding, kayaking, SUP boarding and sailing. Or how about a round of golf? There are some first class golf courses nearby.

Short Breaks Make You Happier

There is some evidence to suggest that taking regular short breaks, instead of using all your allotted holiday time at once, is more fulfilling and pleasurable. According to Dan Ariely, a behavioural economist and author of The Upside of Irrationality, people who take their holidays in short bursts pack in more excitement and create more lasting memories than those who go away for longer periods. Prof Ariely, who teaches at Duke University in North Carolina, said: “On a long vacation, day seven is less good than day one because it’s not as exciting. That’s why in general, going away four times [a year] provides more benefit than you would expect, and going away for one week provides less benefit than you would expect.” We’re not saying you should drop your annual, long summer holiday – just take a couple of additional short breaks to enhance your happiness.

Relatively Simpler Travel

The UK also happens to be perfect for short breaks. With so many interesting destinations within a few hours or half a day’s travel from home, it’s possible to set off early on a Thursday morning, pack in four long days of adventures, and be back home in time for supper on Sunday. Cornwall may seem like a long way away, but it’s a relatively simple drive, train ride or flight from other parts of the UK and certainly less hassle than travelling abroad.

It’s Cheaper Outside the Main Holiday Season

Outside the summer weeks and peak periods such as Easter, holiday cottages and houses in Cornwall can be snapped up for a long weekend at relatively low prices making it an affordable option for a short break away. Here in Padstow and the surrounding villages we have a wide choice of properties available for mini-breaks for much of the year. Plus there are regular special offers and late deals to help the wallet even more.

Enjoy Cornwall Like the Locals

Another benefit of visiting Cornwall over a long weekend, outside the main summer season, is that you can tune into the way the locals live in Cornwall. Follow the locals and you will discover which are the best restaurants to eat at and the most lively pubs and bars for a Saturday night out. Ask around and you will learn if there are any special events, where to go that day for the best waves or which coastal hotspots to visit for the best sunset views.

If you’ve been inspired to make a long weekend trip to Cornwall, we recommend Padstow as the perfect destination for your short break.
