But when the tide and tiredness send you back to shore, Beach Box has the seat for one of the best sunsets in North Cornwall. After days dipping in the emerald horseshoe pool and exploring smugglers’ caves at Porthcothan, when the sun starts to drop behind Will’s Rock, it’s time to walk up the hill to Old Macdonald’s Farm. One of the most relaxed, family-friendly garden bars in North Cornwall, here you can swap tide-ribbed sands for local ciders, wood-fired food and the whole valley turning gold below you. And with animals and playgrounds onsite, there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained when they’ve left the beach behind.

There’s no need to turn your back on the sea and sand after summer days at Mawgan Porth. Retreat to The Merrymoor Inn and you can keep all eyes on the ocean reflecting the fiery hues of the evening sky. With its own IPA named after the neighbouring surf school, plus a lineup of local ales and spirits, this is a proper pub on the beach – with live music and a menu to match. 

Local tip: If you prefer a seafood feast and fine wines at sunset, start with a pint at The Merrymoor, then move next door for dinner at Catch Seafood Bar and Grill.

Salty-skinned after beach adventures in the Seven Bays, gather in the sprawling beer garden of The Cornish Arms and watch the sun set over rolling fields. Just inland from all seven beaches, Stein’s traditional country pub is a sociable, family-friendly spot to eat and drink under blazing skies as the summer light fades. There’s no sea view, but a glass of the vineyard’s award-winning sparkling wine, paired with Cornish oysters and Mediterranean sharing plates, makes this a genuinely lovely alternative to the coast on a summer’s evening.

Local tip: Always book ahead – all table bookings are for inside, but you’re welcome to eat in the wildflower garden and move inside if the evening cools down.

Check the tides. Trevone, Porthcothan, Constantine and Booby’s lose most of their sand at high tide. This can be perfect for a high-tide dip before a sundowner on the cliffs, but less useful if you’re planning a sundowner on the sand.  

Bring a layer. Even on the warmest July day, the breeze off the Atlantic sharpens the moment the sun drops. Pack a jumper and a blanket in the beach bag.
