Toddler-Friendly Holidays in Cornwall: A Stress-Free September Guide for Under-5s

Cornwall slows down the moment the calendar turns. Summer-warmed seas make paddling and stream-splashing balmy for little ones. The sun loses its scorching edge, so kids can play on the sand all day long. Beach days are made easy, with car parks no longer jammed by holiday traffic. Spill out of the car and onto the shore – buckets, blankets, beach gear galore.

And when you’re hungry? Cafés and restaurants that had waitlists in August will seat you – highchair and all – without a second thought. Add uncrowded family attractions, pavements with room for prams, and shoulder-season cottage rates. It’s not just sunset that’s golden in September. For parents of pre-schoolers, it’s the best month to holiday in Padstow. 

Harlyn Bay: Sheltered from the biggest Atlantic swells, with level access straight off the car park. Rockpools at low tide and a café right by the sand make Harlyn easy for early paddlers and sandcastle builders.

Porthcothan Bay: A shallow stream cutting across tide-ribbed sand, pools for paddling in, waves for bodyboarding, and powder-white dunes for picnics. Porthcothan is perfect for toddlers to splash around in warm September seas. 

Locals tip: Wait for the tide to ebb and find the emerald horseshoe pool. 

Trevone Bay: A blue-flag beauty with a beach shop and café where you can buy and hire everything you need for family beach days. Park right beside the beach entrance and yo-yo between the sand and café. Or seek out the 25-metre tidal pool with a shallow end where toddlers can swim safe from the Atlantic swell. 

Treyarnon Bay: Space for sandcastles and windbreaks, waves made for bodyboarding, and an ice cream hut on the cliffs. Treyarnon is a natural family beach. And you can lure toddlers off the sand with promise of a hot chocolate at the YHA café.

Mawgan Porth: With a duo of beach car parks and a cluster of shops and eateries, Mawgan Porth is a dream beach for families with young children. Roll your stroller and supplies straight onto the sand – beach games and sea-bound fun never far from the café or car. 

Daymer Bay: Tucked inside the Camel Estuary and sheltered from the open Atlantic, Daymer Bay is calm and sandy. Park right by the beach, pick up supplies at the car park shop, and explore the wonder of the rock pools at the northern end.

The Camel Trail, Padstow to Wadebridge: Flat, paved and entirely traffic-free. This section of the Camel Trail is built for buggies, balance bikes, and sleeping infants being towed along peacefully. September’s the ideal time for family bike ride: cooler and quieter than summer, with hire bikes easy to come by.

Padstow Harbour: Level walking the whole way round the harbour wall, with ice cream kiosks, boats to watch, and enough benches to make feeding stops easy. Buy a crabbing kit and keep kids entertained for hours trying their luck off the harbour wall. 

Rock to Daymer Bay: Hop on the Black Tor ferry from Padstow to Rock. Buggies are welcome onboard and kids love the ride. On the other side, the coast path to Daymer Bay and Polzeath is gently undulating and largely buggy-friendly – though a sturdy pushchair helps on the sandier, stonier stretches.

National Lobster Hatchery: Right on Padstow harbour and entirely indoors. A rainy-day rescue and made for curious toddlers in any weather.

Macdonald’s Farm, Porthcothan: A relaxed, country-style farm with animal feeding, pony rides, and adventure playgrounds for letting off steam – without the queues that build up in peak summer. A fresh-air fix for the whole family, with great food to match. 

Camel Creek Family Adventure Park: Made for September days out with toddlers in tow, Camel Creek has attractions for all weathers, from log flumes to a huge indoor playhouse. 

Eating out with families in summer can mean long waits, no free tables and missing those early meal times. Whereas September dining brings ease: walk-in tables, highchairs at the ready, and a 6pm sitting instead of being pushed back to the 8pm rush.

Greens is a winner for the whole family, with an 18-hole crazy golf course (shorter clubs for little hands), views over the Camel Estuary, and food that works for breakfast, lunch or a lazy dinner.

The Cornish Arms in St Merryn has a huge garden to play in, a family-friendly dining area and a children’s menu with everything from pasta to mini steaks. Grown-ups, meanwhile, can tuck into Stein-style pub grub, local ales and fine wines. It’s dog-friendly, too.
